The focus of all tutoring at the May Literacy Center is a student’s reading and writing abilities. To strengthen reading we often do writing activities to support and extend the reading.

• When are tutoring services available?
  Tutoring occurs in the Fall semester (September through December), Spring semester (February through May) and during summer session II (July).
• Who provides the tutoring?
  The tutoring is provided by ÐßÐßÊÓƵ University undergraduate students enrolled in the elementary and early childhood teacher education programs, and/or graduate students enrolled in the master’s degree program leading to Reading Specialist Certification.
• What are the types of instruction that are used during tutoring?
  The types of instruction that we provide focus on phonics, fluency, word study, comprehension, vocabulary, and writing in response to text. Children will read fiction and non-fiction texts.
• Does my child really need to attend tutoring every session?
  If you choose to enroll your child in tutoring, it is very important that you make sure your child attends every session except in the case of an illness. For your child to truly benefit from the tutoring weekly attendance is necessary, so the tutor can help your child develop his/her reading and writing abilities. Additionally, our undergraduate and graduate students are depending on the attendance of your child in order to complete their coursework.

The SU undergraduate students will tutor your child in a one-on-one setting for one hour one evening each week. These are students enrolled in the early childhood or elementary teacher education programs at SU. The session lasts ten weeks. The SU instructor oversees the tutors and their interactions with children. On the final evening of the session the tutor will meet with parents and share the results of the tutoring experience and recommendations for the future.

The SU graduate students in the Reading master’s program are required to tutor students as part of their coursework. Most of the graduate students are classroom teachers who live and work in the local area. The tutoring may occur in a one-on-one setting or in small groups and is for one hour one evening each week. The SU instructor oversees the tutors and their interactions with children. Tutoring occurs for 8-10 weeks. On the final evening of the session the tutor will meet with the parent/guardian to share the results of the tutoring experience and make recommendations for the future.

If your child has been identified and receives special education services in public or private schools then, this information must be disclosed by the parent at the time of enrollment in order to better meet the needs of your child.

If your child has a health issue such as an allergy to peanuts or diabetes we need to know, so we can act appropriately should an emergency arise.

How Much Does the Tutoring Cost?
